How To Start Your Day on a Positive Note
“Look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning”. This is such an overused phrase for when we are just having one of those days and we don’t know why. But the start of our days can make such a difference to how we feel throughout the day. So here are some tips to put you in a good mood first thing and continue your day on a positive note.
If you share your bed with your partner then set your alarm ten minutes early and turn over to hug your other half. It is so nice to start the day with a snuggle and the endorphins released will keep you feeling warm and cosy long after you have left your bed.
If you sleep alone, still do this but just use those ten minutes to meditate. Feel the covers around you and the softness and warmness of your bed. Take in everything that you feel and cuddle with yourself.
Meditating first thing in the morning will set the tone for the day so well.
Don’t forget to cuddle your pets if you have them too, the morning is the perfect time to get those much needed hugs and dish out the belly rubs.
If you start your day manic and rushing around getting everything done you are just going to feel stressed for the rest of the day.
Instead, wake up a little earlier and take your time. I always start my day with something incredibly relaxing, which for me is doing my makeup. I spend half an hour just sitting in front of my mirror doing my makeup. I take my time and enjoy the process.
Having this relaxing ritual first thing means that I can take the time to wake up and just get into a relaxed and positive mindset ready for the day.
So no matter what your routine is in the morning, allow more time than you need and fit in something that relaxes you and eases you into the day.
Up until about a year ago I never ate breakfast. I have never been a massive fan of breakfast food and didn’t think I had the time to eat it.
Now I always make sure I give myself time to eat. I have found breakfasts that I love such as overnight oats or a delicious smoothie and I take some time to enjoy it before I have to leave for work.
There are lots of studies to show that skipping breakfast is not the healthiest thing to do so take some time and nourish your body in the morning.
And besides, food is life and it can bring us so much joy so if you allow yourself something delicious in the morning it will fill you up with nutrients and joy to carry with you for the rest of the day.
If you struggle with negative thoughts you want to spend your morning challenging these thoughts and starting to turn them into positive ones.
The best way to do this is using affirmations. Look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are beautiful, that you are capable, that you can achieve anything.
If there is something that you struggle with you need to give yourself compliments that challenge the struggle you feel within yourself.
Because if you tell yourself something for long enough then you will start to beleive it. That rings true for both negative and positive things. So why not make it a positive?
So remind yourself each morning of all the things you have achieved and what you love about yourself and you are more likely to feel proud and joyful for the rest of the day.
To Do List
The last thing you want to do is start your day having no idea where you should start, what you should do and how you should do it.
I get around this by creating a To Do List. This means I can set aside a couple of minutes to sit and write down what I want to achieve that day. Sometimes I will even do this the night before so I am all prepped and ready to get started the next day.
It gets my mind together and my priorities down on paper. Once this is in place I can then see clearly what it is that I need to do. I can pick our what will be the highest priority start with that and just go one by one down the list.
This takes the stress out of the morning and again allows me to take it easy.
The outdoors can do wonders for your day. So practicing mindfulness outside can really cleanse your mind and get you started on a positive day.
So whether you eat breakfast outside, go for a walk or even take the time to appreciate the world around you whilst you walk to the bus stop just get aquainted with the outdoors.
Whenever you are outside listen to the birds, feel the wind against your face, see the beauty around you, take it all in. Being able to be mindful like this along with taking big fresh lungfuls of air will no doubt make you feel refreshed and ready for the day.
So these are the things I do every morning in order for me to feel positive and happy throughout the day. Which one are you going to try first?
