Essentially our bodies are just vessels, but how we treat our physical bodies reflects on our souls. If you don't take care of your body your mind won't be at it's best. I wanted to explore what we can do with each of our senses to start letting in more joy and to take care of ourselves deeply. Our minds are our most important asset, to live a completely fulfilled life we want our minds to be at their best so here are a few things to help treat your body and heal your mind.
What we eat.
As I have said before it is always important to give our body all of the nutrients it needs and to stop consuming food that isn't good for us. We need to step away from the idea of losing weight and dieting and more onto the actual effects of food on our body internally.
A lot of people don't realize that actually what we consume makes a huge impact on us, even if you are lucky enough to not see it physically. We have to fuel our body for our organs to work, for our muscles to allow us to move, for our brain to be able to function. All this fuel comes from what we eat. So start really thinking about what you are putting into your body. Is it nutritious and full of amazing ingredients that will make your body thrive?
I think the best thing to follow for both a clear body and a clear mind is to cut down on sugar. When our glucose levels spike this can wreak havoc in our bodies. Not only is this bad for our physical bodies but also our minds. I found this article really interesting as it shines a light on how sugar can affect, memory, depression and even dementia. It is definitely worth a read.
If you are thinking of quitting sugar you need to read I Quit Sugar by Sarah Wilson. It will set you up and give you all the information you need to make that change.
What we view.
Whether you are watching Netflix, reading a book or even just getting out the house and taking in the world around you, you want to be experiencing something that is truly feeding your soul.
There is nothing wrong with watching trashy TV every now and again but if you are consuming this constantly, it isn't really going nourish your mind. Watch a show on Netflix that makes you think, that opens your mind and inspires you. Read a book that feeds your soul and makes you feel alive. Anything educational will be sure to inspire you and keep your brain working, it will make you feel more motivated to get out and make a difference, even if it just in your own life.
See the world. If you haven't traveled much already you need to do it, even if you don't leave your country. Just get out and experience somewhere you have never been before. Every time I see somewhere new I feel more alive and so fulfilled. You will never regret seeing somewhere new and it will do wonders for your soul. So get out there, and see some amazing things and experience beautiful places. Trust me those memories will live with your forever and make you so full of joy.
What we feel.
There is nothing better than being wrapped up in a warm blanket in front of the fire or getting in a hot bubble bath. Maybe you prefer to be outside feeling the sun on your face with grass beneath your feet.
Whatever it is, spend more time feeling the world around you and really taking it in. Mindfulness meditation is a great practice for this. Get comfortable and really think of how the everything feels beneath you. From the top of your head to the tips of your toes, close your eyes and just feel each inch of your skin and how it feels against the dewy grass or that soft blanket. I love the process of starting from your toes and becoming aware of how they feel, then moving up to the ankles, then the knees and keep going until you think about how your head feels against your pillow or how the sun feels beaming onto your face. It is such a relaxing experience and is even great to do when you are trying to fall asleep.
If You want some guidance to practice this type of meditation follow this youtube video which talks you through the 'Body Scan'.
This is also a great time to listen to your body. Are there any aches and pains that you feel or just discomforts? Is there something you can adjust to make yourself feel better? It is such a good idea to set aside some time and really make yourself aware of your physical body and how that might affect your mind.
What we listen to.
Music and Podcasts are so important to my everyday life. Like I said it is important to be mindful of the world around you but sometimes it is just great to use opportunities, like walking to the bus stop or driving to work to listen to something that inspires you.
Podcasts are great for this, you can literally find a podcast on any topic that interests you. Whether you want to learn more about something or just get inspired by an amazing speaker, you will find something. Just start downloading some episodes and you will find a show that you really resonate with.
Now music, we all love music but I feel like as we get older we get used just to putting up with what is on the radio. Getting interupted every 5 minutes with adverts and not being bothered to turn over when a crappy song comes on. I never listen to the radio now. I have signed up to iTunes and it is the best thing I have done. I download all the music I love at the moment, along with the music that helps me reminisce about years ago. I can make playlists for when I am in certain moods or just shuffle my entire library to surprise myself. Having music on is so uplifting especially when that song comes on that just makes you want to move about and smile. Trust me, invest in a way to start listening to the music you really love, it can set you up for an amazing day.
What we give.
It's not just what we bring into ourselves that feeds our souls but what we give out. I know we all try our best to treat those around us with respect and kindness but sometimes we can take them for granted. Just make those extra, small gestures to those around you when you want to remind them how much you care.
Treat your other halves well. Surprise them. It doesn't have to be with gifts, it could be love notes or creating a little sanctuary for when they come home from work. Visit your parents or your grandparents more often. Help out your friends when they need a hand. I bet that you will feel so good when you have spent a day helping a friend out without expecting anything in return.
Not only should we reach out and give to those we know and love but even to those we don't know. If you don't already it is great to find a charity or cause close to your heart and give generously to them. I am a huge animal lover and I have been giving to animal charities for years. This makes me feel so at peace knowing that I am making a difference, even if it is a small one. So find something that you are passionate about and help out in any way that you can.
Which one of these points do you resonate with the most?
