I used to be so messy. I would have clothes all over my floor, I would never make my bed and I certainly wouldn't regularly clean or vacuum. But in the last two years, I have significantly improved how I look after my space. I always make sure to keep my room nice and tidy now and for the most part, it is always presentable. Find out how to keep your house or room clean and tidy at all times.
Don't Go To Bed or Leave the House with a Messy Room
My first rule and the one that made a huge difference was to never go to bed or leave the house with a messy room. This meant that I would not allow myself to get into bed without picking up everything that needed to go away. I wouldn't have dirty cups or clothes piled on my chair. If I woke up in the morning with a tidy room then I was more likely able to keep it tidy as I get ready in the morning and throughout the day. Plus it is so nice being able to wake up to a nice clean room to give you a great start to your day.
Also before I go out I have a clear up so I don't get back to an untidy room. There is nothing worse than getting home from an exhausting day to then have to tidy everything up to make yourself feel comfortable. Eventually, when you become tidier in general, you won't need to spend as long tidying and putting things away because hopefully, the mess wouldn't have built up in the first place.
Don't Go Anywhere Empty-Handed
This is so easy to miss but it is important to never go anywhere empty-handed. If I decided to go down to the kitchen to get a snack then why wouldn't I take down a glass or the dog bowl that needs refilling? There are so many times when we just walk past small messes that can be cleaned up with no extra time. Just be aware of your space around you. If anything is out of place and will take you no time at all to correct, just do it. Again this will save time when it comes to the bigger clean up before you head to bed.
Clean up After Yourself
Now, this one is the most obvious. Just. Clean. Up. After. Yourself. I know, I know, it is harder than it sounds to not just leave a trail of destruction behind you wherever you go. But just get into the habit, and you will notice that you no longer need to do the big tidies anymore. It is so easy for us to use something and leave it out or tell ourselves we will do it later. I can't tell you how much this annoys me now. Whenever I put my make up on, after I use each individual item I will put it back in its place. It takes no extra time, it’s just me being more mindful. It means that there is nothing left on my vanity to tidy up after. And if I am ever running late I won't leave it all out like I used to do in the past, to then come home and have to deal with it then.
Also cleaning up dishes. As soon as I finish my food, me and my fiance head to the kitchen and wash the dishes, and clean the worktops. This means we never have a pile-up of dishes and the kitchen always sparkles. I know, the last thing you want to do when you finish eating is clean everything in the kitchen, but once you make it part of your routine you will do it without thinking.
Put Away Clean Clothes Straight Away
I don't know about you but having a pile of clean clothes sitting in my room waiting to be put away is a catalyst in turning my room into a bombsite. I end up just moving the pile of clothes from my bed, then to my chair when I go to sleep, then on the floor when I need to sit down. Then eventually the neat pile turns into a mound and before I know it the mound starts growing and it looks all too overwhelming for me to want to do anything about it.
Now as soon as I have a pile of clothes I put them away straight away. This alleviates my problem and I no longer have to keep moving things around to accommodate my life.
Invest in Some Decor
I have had rooms in the past that were not particularly pretty and I ended up not having much pride in my space. This made me not worry so much about the mess. Ever since I have had a pretty bedroom I have always wanted to keep it in its prime to make the most of my beautiful decor.
I would definitely recommend putting some effort into your home decor. Once you love the way it looks, you won't want any mess or dirtiness ruining the look of your carefully curated home.
Also, invest in some great looking storage options. Always have enough storage for what you own, if you don't that is when things start to overspill and it can turn into a real mess, real quick. I love this little basket to put my cushions and throws in when I am not using them. Always nice to have somewhere to put your cushions before you climb into bed rather than making a mess of them elsewhere.
Set a Timer
Sometimes I would look around my room and think, dear god what have I done. You know those moments when you don't quite realize what a state you have got your room in and then all of a sudden it hits you.
These times are best spent with a timer. Set your timer to I don't know, 15 minutes, 30 minutes. Whatever you think is best for the mess that surrounds you. Then don't allow yourself to stop or sit down during that time. Just focus completely on tidying up. Because you know you have an allotted time slot you will get stuff done so much quicker and before you know it you have cleared your room with precious time to spare.
PS How cute is this little kitty egg timer?
Have a Clear Out of Stuff You No Longer Need
One of the biggest factors why people can't seem to keep a space tidy is that they just simply own too much stuff. It's time to have a clear out. If there is anything that you don't need any more just get rid of it. I would recommend reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo (get it here). It really opened my eyes to how I was holding onto things that I no longer needed or really wanted.
If there is something that you do really want to hold onto for sentimental value or you only use it at a certain time of the year then put it in the loft. I have a box of holiday clothes that I know most people would keep in the back of their wardrobe, but unfortunately I only go away once a year so there is no need to clutter my bedroom with this when I can just keep it in a box in the loft and easily get it down on the rare occasion I need it. I am not telling you to hoard absolutely everything in your attic but just the things that you do need but don't use all the time. It frees up storage and makes keeping a tidy home more attainable.
If it is clothes you are looking to put away these Vacuum storage bags are a lifesaver. Especially if you don't have much attic space and only have limited storage. Just put the clothes in that are out of season and vacuum the bag until they are half the size. Easy.
I use each of these tips every day to keep my home tidy and fresh looking. As long as you follow these simple ideas you can keep a home to be proud of and always be ready for visitors without doing that pre-visit panic tidy.
