How To Become The Person You Dream of Being

We all have a picture in our head of the person we wish we were or hope to be in the future. We look at them as our future selves. They could be slimmer, or have their own business, their own home or they could be happily married. But how do we get from who we are right here, right now to that future self? And why do they feel so far away? Here is how to become that future self that you are dreaming of. 

So this article started off as a newsletter sent out to my email list family (scroll down and sign up, I send out 1-2 emails a week). It focused on how to become extraordinary by just taking one more action than an ordinary person would. And as I was writing I came onto this topic of how we have an image of the person we want to become in our mind and how we can get there. So I thought I would elaborate more here. 

True You Not Future You

Firstly, we should not look at that person we see in our minds as future versions of ourselves. It kind of detaches them from us and we don't want this. This is because that person is still you, they will still be the same person as you are now. 

So instead of thinking of them as your future you, think of them as your True You. The person that you are deep down. 

So really get down to it and imagine how your True You feels, what they do and how they act. 

And the reality is that in order for you to become your True You, you have to already act like them. Make the decisions that they would make and do the work that they would do. 

I have always dreamed of being this healthy girl who goes to the gym and drinks smoothies. Now I know in order for me to become her I actually have to go to the gym and drink smoothies. As simple as that, there is no other way to become her if I don't actually embody her traits. So why not start now? 

A lot of us think there is a disconnect in the work we have to put in now and the actions that our true selves would take but in fact, they go hand in hand. 

Ask Yourself What Would They Do?

So following on from before, you need to be your True You now in order for it to actually happen.

So every single morning wake up and ask yourself, what would my true self do today? Would she go to the gym? Would she send that email to the potential client? Would she put that extra £100 into savings? 

You also want to ask yourself what will your true self not do today. So she wouldn't eat crappy food. She wouldn't put off writing content for her blog. She wouldn't buy that T-Shirt that she just doesn't need.

So you need to get into her mindset.

I want you to write this down and have it tangible so you can hold yourself more accountable, and you can remind yourself of it every day. 

Then when you are thinking about if you can be bothered to write that post, or someone brings cake into the office you can make the decisions that will bring you closer to your True You. 

See how it works. Once you start making the same choices as she would then you will evolve into her.

Just Do One Extra Step

If you continue to live the way you are right now, not getting any closer to your goals or your true self then you are not going achieve much at all. Sorry to say it so bluntly.

Every single human has dreams, but only a handful actually go onto achieve them. And that is because they just can't seem to get their mindset right.

They will put things off (I wrote about the 'When...Then' Mindset here.) or they don't understand the concept that they have to evolve themselves first into this truer self and not that they will become this person later on down the line. 

You don't need to overwhelm yourself either. If your True You wants to run a marathon, you don't want to go ahead and sign up and go crazy. Just pick up parts of her traits.

So start by running once or twice a week, or join a running club for beginners. Maybe just look at your diet first so your nutrition is ready for the physical effort you will have to put in.

All you need to do is just take one step towards your True You every day. That is all.

It will never happen overnight. As long as you are just asking yourself, "What is the one thing that I can do today that embodies my True You and will get me closer to my goals" and then actually take action, you are killing it. 

Keep doing this and staying in this mindset and before you know it you will be that person you have always dreamed of.
