The Best Evening Routine to Boost Wellness and Productivity

I used to be so bad at having an evening routine, and this would cause me to really struggle to go to sleep. Then this, in turn, affected my morning the next day. Now though I feel like I have my routine down to a tee and this means I am able to really relax and feel ready to go to sleep and tackle the next day with confidence. So here is a great routine you need to follow to boost your wellness and productivity. 

1. Treat Your Skin

When I was a teenager I would never take off my makeup before I went to bed. I was just too lazy and wanted to crawl into bed and go to sleep. Thinking back on it now makes me cringe so much, how could I do that to my skin?

It is so important to make sure you are cleaning your skin thoroughly so you can go to bed with no nasties sitting on your face. Skincare is such a good starting point when beginning your self-care journey. Let's face it, it isn't too difficult either. 

Now is a great time to start working out your ideal skincare routine. Mine starts in the shower, where I remove my makeup with a cream cleanser, then wash and exfoliate my face. Once I get out of the shower I tone, use a serum, eye cream and night cream. It may sound a lot but does not take long at all and it is like a mini pamper each evening.

This tip can be used in so many other ways as well, by looking after your physical body before you get in bed you will feel so much better drifting off and waking up again in the morning. Brush your teeth, treat your hair, moisturize your body - whatever it is to make you feel relaxed and pampered for the evening. 

2. Turn Off Any Screens

This is probably the most shouted tip to getting ready for bed but also the one that is most ignored. I can tell you, this is not just said for the sake of it. I always make sure I turn off all electrical screen items at least half an hour before I go to bed. 

If I would try going to sleep straight after staring at a screen I would feel and almost hear a buzzing in my head. This buzz was my brain continuing to be wired and not settling down. Ever since I have allowed a good break from technology this buzz has died off completely. I can now get in bed relaxed and feeling ready to drift off.

I really love reading a book before I go to sleep as it helps me wind down. It quietens my mind as I am just focusing on the story in front of me and I am not worrying about things happening in my life. Also, I don't know about you but after reading for about half an hour I struggle to keep my eyes open. That helps me to drift off a lot.

3. Journal

At the end of each day, writing down how you felt or what happened will allow you to reflect. This will encourage you to make the most of each day. If however, you haven't had a great day you can ponder this and release the negative emotions attached to it into your notepad, ready for a fresh start tomorrow. 

Another great way to stick with a positive mindset no matter what you go through is to write what you are grateful for each day. Even if it is just one small thing, this will help you focus in on the good things you have going on in every situation. 

Getting things down on paper releases it and allows your mind to stop racing. If you have anything you don't want to forget for tomorrow, write that down. Once again, this thought can then leave your mind for the evening allowing you to fall asleep easy with no worry, knowing that you have everything written down to remember to get started on tomorrow. 

4. Prep for Tomorrow

The worst thing to do in the morning is to rush around and get everything done before you have to get started with work. If you always struggle to find an outfit or have to quickly make your lunch each morning, you are not being productive with your time. This can ultimately lead to a stressful day.

So lay out your outfit for the next day. Pack up your lunch and put it in the fridge - or even better make your lunches in bulk the previous Sunday. Anything that you can do the night before that will stop you from running around in the morning will help massively. 

I get it, it is easy to put things off the night before when you feel like you can't be bothered but morning you will thank you so much for it. If you have to do it anyway might as well get it over and done with.  

Also once you get in bed knowing that everything is sorted and ready for you to have a relaxing morning, you will fall asleep in no time.

5. Talk To Your Loved Ones

I think it is so important to say goodnight to those you love. If you speak to your parents each day then why not say goodnight, even just drop them a text. Or if you leave your partner watching television downstairs whilst you go to bed, go down and give them a kiss goodnight. These little gestures will make such a difference.

Finishing your night off with a moment of connection with your loved ones will fill your heart right before you settle down and ensure you fall into a warm and peaceful sleep. 

If you have had an argument with your partner, sort it before you go to bed. Don't go to bed mad or upset, this will not help you sleep at all and will set the tone for the following day. Just get everything sorted before you get in bed and you will feel so much better.
